World Taekwondo Mandeville uses a 9-Kup ranking system based on Kukkiwon standard, with eleven total grades from White Belt through 1st Degree Black Belt. Click any rank below to view its full syllabus.
Rank colors and order vary between systems and styles. Ranks are typically divided into the levels prior to Black Belt (color belts, or Kup) and the levels after Black Belt (Poom or Dan), as junior and senior. We begin at the larger number for White Belt and count down toward the highest Kup rank — this ranking system is based on Kukkiwon belt ranking.
The senior section of ranks is divided by nine ranks as well. Each black belt level is called a degree, or dan. The numbering sequence for Dan ranks is opposite color belts — it begins at first Dan and counts up. Students with 1st–3rd degree may assist with teaching and train as an instructor; 4th–6th degree are considered Master; 7th–9th degree are referred to as Grandmaster, which carries a minimum age requirement of 40.
Kukkiwon standard recognises a rank of black belt for practitioners under age 15, called Poom. These students have passed Dan-level tests but do not receive full Dan rank until reaching the required age — Poom transitions automatically to the equivalent Dan rank without additional testing. World Taekwondo Mandeville follows this Kukkiwon standard.
To advance from one rank to the next, students qualify for promotion testing. Each Kup level is assigned a minimum length of time practising, a minimum number of classes attended, and an instructor recommendation. Rank tests are held quarterly, on the condition that students have completed the requirements on their specific syllabus.
